Rotating the string creates a new telemetry destination and stops accepting data on the old one. It is the right answer when the string has leaked, has left your organization, or you simply want to cut it by internal policy.
What happens exactly
- A new destination with a new string is created.
- The previous destination stops accepting data immediately.
- Data already ingested is kept and stays visible in the dashboards.
- Your D365 environment keeps pointing at the old destination until you paste the new string. Nothing is ingested during that gap.
That gap is real: between rotating and pasting the new string into D365, telemetry is lost. It is not recoverable. Do it with the D365 screen already open.
How to do it
- Open Connections → D365 connectionScroll down to the «Rotate string» section.
- Tick the confirmation boxYou confirm you understand the current string stops working and that you must update it in D365. Without ticking it, the button does nothing.
- Press «Rotate string»When it finishes you will see the notice telling you to paste it into Dynamics 365 again.
- Reveal the new string and paste it into D365Same place as always: System administration → Monitoring and Telemetry parameters, Application Insights Registry tab.
If you see the notice saying the previous destination will be deleted on a retry, the new string is already active. Cleaning up the old resource happens on its own and does not block ingestion.
Who can do it
Administrators and owners only. The rotation is recorded in the Audit log as «Rotated the connection string», with the user and the date.
